According to one of the researchers involved, the first experiments to transmit electricity from space to Earth could lead to a space solar power plant within 10 years.

Such a station would benefit from greater exposure to the sun due to the lack of clouds and atmosphere with the ability to avoid night darkness. However, the difficulty of designing and building a structure efficient enough yet light enough to be launched by rocket made such a facility impractical.
