birth control pills They are as safe and effective when obtained through telehealth services and self-administered as when used in doctors’ offices, according to the largest study of telehealth abortions to date.

The first study of a few hundred pregnancies found telehealth abortions to be safe. For further investigation with a larger sample size, Ushma Upadhyay At the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues collected data on more than 6,000 telehealth abortions in 20 US states and Washington, DC. All participants were less than 10 weeks pregnant. About 72 percent of them received abortion pills through secure text messaging, and the rest made appointments through video calls.

The researchers followed the participants between three and seven days after the miscarriage and again two to four weeks later. The team found that about 98 percent of abortions effectively terminate a pregnancy. Additionally, only 0.25 percent of participants experienced serious side effects such as uncontrolled bleeding or infection. In comparison, mifepristone alone is more than 97 percent effective and causes adverse events 0.3 percent of the time.

Anti-abortion groups Now this decision is being challenged in the US Supreme Court.

“These findings are consistent with the abundance of evidence we have that mifepristone is safe and effective, and that the FDA’s decision to remove the in-person dispensing requirement was scientifically sound,” says Upadhyay.

“Results are fundamentally different between patients visiting telehealth and brick-and-mortar clinics,” says Samuel Dickman In Reproductive Health Nonprofit Planned Parenthood of Montana. He says telehealth abortions are important for providing care to people in rural areas or those who don’t feel safe traveling to abortion clinics because of abusive partners.
